Back Together Again

Charles smiled as he stepped out of the treeline, the noon sun greeting him with its heat as he gazed upon the house. He was back, and, for the first time since he got to the preserve, he might actually get a chance to relax. There was still Alice that needed to be found, but her file made it out to be that she wouldn’t be a problem. After all, she was a quieter girl, and one who might even just end up coming back on her own, despite what pushed her out. That meant he’d be able to focus on Wuice, start lessons, and maybe not have to run out the door for some new problem that came up over the next few weeks before he went to let her know everything was ready for her.

He glanced back at Sarah, who’d been quiet for most of the morning. At first, he’d been worried about how she might be, but as they shared a cold breakfast, her small smile and a small hug told him that she didn’t regret last night. At least, he hoped he was understanding the actions right. With Sarah it wasn’t always that simple. Then again, as one of his old professors put it, it was never that simple, and you would insult your patients if you ever claimed that.

She must have been thinking about the fact that they’d be home soon as well, as she finally spoke when she looked up and spotted the house herself. “Thank you. I know you probably already understand that, but… I don’t know.”

Charles smiled as they continued to walk, a little happy that he hadn’t been spotted by the dragons yet, just so he could have this chance with her. “You should know that I’m here anytime you need me. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to ask for the night alone with me so we can talk, or even just hold each other. It’s a part of my duty as your friend after all, let alone as your caretaker.”

“Thank you. It… Sarafune never could give me that time. He always just assumed I was strong enough, even though he knew about my past. I wasn’t a blatant problem, so I was allowed to be in the background. I was even trusted with trying to take care of Wuice when she first came to the preserve, since she wouldn’t talk to Sarafune.”

“Did you agree with him?”

For a moment, Charles was stopped as he couldn’t move the stretcher, and he looked back at Sarah who was looking at nothing. Her face gave away nothing back, not until she shut her eyes and let out a shaky breath. “I used to. I used to think I was always right in what I did. Just like Kiren I bet.”

Charles smiled at her before he nodded towards the house. “Come on, let’s get you back already so you can start getting some more experience in letting people in. How about it?”

Sarah shook her head.
